چکیده

It has been previously shown that frontal white matter (fWM) choline-containing compounds (tCho) increase with alcohol consumption in social drinkers but were found decreased in detoxified alcoholics [1,2]. With this study we aimed to investigate whether fWM tCho would still be elevated in heavy drinking as well as in non-abstinent alcohol dependent patients. Since Glutamate plays an important role in alcoholism [3] we further investigated correlations between glutamate concentrations and measures of alcohol addiction. Methods

Cortical metabolite alterations in abstinent cocaine and cocaine/alcohol-dependent subjects: proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging.

Chronic abuse of cocaine or alcohol is associated with structural, neuropathological and cognitive impairments that have been documented extensively. Little is known, however, about neurobiochemical changes in chronic substance abusers. We performed MRI and multi-slice brain proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) to assess neuronal viability (via N-acetylaspartate (NAA)) and whit...

Cerebral proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of a patient with giant axonal neuropathy.

Magnetic resonance imaging of a girl with giant axonal neuropathy revealed a progressive white matter disease. In close agreement with histopathological features reported previously, localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 9 and 12 years of age indicated a specific damage or loss of axons (reduced N-acetylaspartate and N-acetylaspartylglutamate) accompanied by acute demyelination (e...

Increase of total creatine in human brain after oral supplementation of creatine-monohydrate.

The effect of oral creatine supplementation on brain metabolite concentrations was investigated in gray matter, white matter, cerebellum, and thalamus of healthy young volunteers by means of quantitative localized proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in vivo (2.0 T, stimulated echo acquisition mode sequence; repetition time = 6,000 ms, echo time = 20 ms, middle interval = 10 ms, automated spe...

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy outcomes from a comprehensive magnetic resonance study of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Magnetic resonance (MR) technology offers noninvasive methods for in vivo assessment of neuroabnormalities. A comprehensive neuropsychological/behavioral, MR imaging (MRI), MR spectroscopy (MRS) and functional MRI (fMRI) assessment was administered to children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) to determine whether global and/or focal abnormalities could be identified and to distingui...

Enhanced axonal metabolism during early natalizumab treatment in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The considerable clinical effect of natalizumab in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis might be explained by its possible beneficial effect on axonal functioning. In this longitudinal study, the effect of natalizumab on absolute concentrations of total N-acetylaspartate, a marker for neuronal integrity, and other brain metabolites is investigated in patie...
